Premium Lenses in Boca Raton, FL & the surrounding areas
By the time we turn 40 most of us are wearing reading glasses or bifocals. This has to do with a hardening of our natural God-given crystalline lens as we grow in wisdom and get older. Once the lens becomes hard, it can no longer change shape and provide near vision. That is when we begin to wear “cheaters” or reading glasses.
When our natural lens becomes cloudy and surgery is performed, an intraocular lens (IOL) implant is placed in the eye to replace the crystalline lens. With the many advances that have been made in the world of ophthalmology, today’s cataract patients can now choose between a Standard Single Focus Lens or an Advanced Technology Premium lens.
Standard IOLs (intraocular lens implants), for a patient without astigmatism, are designed to provide good distance vision. Choosing a standard lens will typically require reading glasses to correct near vision. If there is any astigmatism present, the patient will need glasses for intermediate and distance vision as well.
Today new advanced Premium Lenses are also available. These implants provide a more natural range of vision without glasses, correcting astigmatism and allowing you to see distances (driving), intermediate (computer), and near (reading).
Advance Technology Premium Lenses
There are two main categories of Premium lenses available in the United States:
- Toric IOLs that correct astigmatism.
- Presbyopia-Correcting IOLs that are designed to provide a more natural range of vision for near (reading), intermediate (computer) and distances (driving).
Toric Astigmatism Correcting IOLs
Most of us have astigmatism to some degree. So what exactly does this mean? Corneal astigmatism is a condition where the shape of the cornea is not spherical like a baseball, but more like a football, causing the light to focus on multiple points in the retina. The result is blurred or distorted vision.
Toric IOLs are designed to correct astigmatism, minimizing and sometimes completely eliminating the need for distance glasses following laser cataract surgery.
Presbyopia Correcting IOLs
The Premium Lenses that enable us to recover some near vision following laser cataract surgery are presbyopia correcting implants.
In addition to providing good distance vision, these lenses provide the best intermediate vision for tasks such as working on computers, playing board games, cooking and shopping as well as looking at our car dashboard.
Though able to provide some near vision for reading, our experience is that the near vision is somewhat variable. Our patients typically can read most magazines but may require weak readers for newspapers or very small print.
