Which Lens is Right for me?

Today’s cataract surgery patient now has the option of choosing between a standard lens or one of several premium lenses. Implantable Lenses Fall into two main categories: Standard and Premium.

Standard Lenses

During traditional cataract surgery, your eye’s natural lens will be replaced with a synthetic monofocal intraocular lens (IOL). The surgery will bring a patients vision back to where it was prior to the onset of cataracts, however, if prior to cataracts he or she had a prescription for glasses or contact lenses, those visual aids will still be required for both distance and reading vision. Many patients are satisfied with this lens, as it restores their vision to a functional point.

Advanced Premium Lenses

Premium IOLs are designed to minimize or eliminate the need for glasses by correcting astigmatism and providing a more natural range of vision for near (reading), intermediate (computer) and distances (driving). Toric Astigmatism-Correcting IOLs

Astigmatism is a common condition where the cornea, instead of being round like a basketball, is shaped more like a football. This irregular shape causes light to focus on multiple points in the retina, leading to blurred or distorted vision. Toric IOLs are specially designed to correct astigmatism, significantly reducing or even eliminating the need for distance glasses after cataract surgery.

Presbyopia-Correcting IOLs

Presbyopia-correcting lenses help restore some near vision after laser cataract surgery. These premium lenses provide excellent distance and intermediate vision, making tasks like using a computer, cooking, shopping, or checking your car dashboard easier. While they also improve near vision for reading, the results can vary. Most patients can read magazines comfortably, though they may still need weak reading glasses for newspapers or very small print.

Which Lenses do we Offer?

The Light Adjustable Lens is a groundbreaking advancement in intraocular lens technology. It’s the first and only lens that can be customized after cataract surgery, allowing you to “test drive” your vision and adjust it to meet your specific needs.

After surgery, you’ll work with your doctor to try out and finalize your ideal lens prescription during a few in-office adjustments. Patients who have had prior refractive surgery (i.e., Lasik or PRK) are especially strong candidates for this lens.

The PanOptix lens is the first trifocal lens available in the United States, specifically designed to enhance vision at near, intermediate, and far distances, with an option to correct astigmatism as well.

This innovative lens provides exceptional clarity across all ranges, significantly reducing the need for glasses. Studies confirm its safety and effectiveness, with 99% of participants reporting high satisfaction and saying they would choose the lens again.

While other intraocular lenses (IOLs) address both near and distance vision, the PanOptix lens also improves intermediate vision, making activities like working on a computer, applying makeup, or shaving much easier. It also enhances near vision for tasks such as reading, writing, or sewing.

The Tecnis Symfony lens is an advanced Intraocular Lens (IOL) designed for people with presbyopia and cataracts. It’s the first lens of its kind to treat both conditions while enhancing vision across all ranges—near, intermediate, and distant. Unlike many IOLs, the Symfony lens minimizes halos and glare around lights, providing patients with clear, sharp vision. It also reduces the need for reading glasses, allowing for a higher quality of life.

Ideal for those undergoing cataract surgery, the Symfony IOL is implanted during the procedure to replace the clouded lens. The surgery itself remains the same, but the results are transformative—most patients notice improved vision almost immediately, with full clarity following soon after. The Symfony lens offers a comprehensive solution for clearer, crisper vision.

The Tecnis lens is a “multifocal” intraocular lens designed to provide multiple points of focus after cataract surgery. Unlike standard lenses that correct only distance vision, the Tecnis lens allows patients to see clearly at distance, intermediate, and near—often with minimal reliance on glasses.

This lens is ideal for patients seeking freedom from reading glasses, especially those who want excellent near vision for tasks like reading. However, it’s important to note that not everyone is a candidate for the Tecnis lens. Patients with significant astigmatism, a history of corneal surgery (such as LASIK, RK, or PRK), or retinal conditions like macular degeneration or diabetic retinopathy are typically not suitable candidates.

With few side effects, the Tecnis lens has significantly reduced the glare and halo issues associated with older multifocal lenses. It’s also a great choice for refractive lens exchange, a procedure for patients in their 40s or 50s who want to address presbyopia and improve their ability to see up close without glasses.

The TECNIS Synergy lens is a continuous-range-of-vision intraocular lens. Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide. During cataract surgery, there are a number of lens options out there but the TECNIS Synergy is the first of its kind to provide patients with distance, intermediate, and near vision day and night. The lens provides Violet-filtering technology which allows for superior vision at night and reduces instances of halos some patients experience during nighttime driving after cataract surgery. Other multifocal and trifocal lenses can leave patients with visual gaps but with the TECNIS Synergy, patients can focus at any point within the lens range.

For patients with astigmatism, Toric intraocular lenses (IOLs) offer a groundbreaking solution to correct corneal asymmetry. Previously, individuals with both cataracts and astigmatism relied on glasses or contact lenses to manage their condition. Now, with a Toric IOL implant, the imbalance caused by astigmatism is corrected during cataract surgery.
