Our History
Aker Kasten Eye Center was founded on a love for ophthalmology and a passion for improving lives. Dr. Alan Aker and Dr. Ann Kasten met at Cornell University’s North Shore University Hospital, where their shared medical expertise and dedication sparked both a professional and personal partnership.
Dr. Aker’s career began with groundbreaking achievements, including performing one of the first vitrectomies in the New York area and pioneering lens implant techniques under the mentorship of Dr. Ira Kaufman. Dr. Kaufman’s philosophy—honoring the giants of the past while advancing innovation—inspired Dr. Aker to share his knowledge, organizing one of the tri-state area’s first cataract and implant training courses, which attracted hundreds of physicians.
Dr. Kasten, originally an OB-GYN, fell in love with ophthalmology after witnessing Dr. Aker’s work. She pivoted her career to join him in advancing eye care, combining their skills to create a practice grounded in innovation, compassion, and the close-knit values of family.
The Aker Kasten Eye Center was built with these family values at its core, fostering a culture of trust, personalized care, and commitment to community well-being. These guiding principles have been central to the center’s philosophy from its humble beginnings in New York to its relocation and growth in South Florida in the mid-1980s.

A Family-Run Practice
Dr. Jonathan Aker, son of Dr. Kasten and Dr. Aker, has returned to Florida to join the team as the practice’s newest surgeon. He brings a fresh perspective, integrating the latest advancements in technology and surgical techniques to enhance patient outcomes.
Rebecca Aker, their daughter, also plays an essential role, assisting Dr. Kasten in operating the Femtosecond Laser.
Rebecca’s husband, Dr. Jeff Rapp, PhD, serves as the medical science liaison, advocating for patients and providing education on cutting-edge technologies and lens options, ensuring our patients make informed decisions about their care.
Today, Aker Kasten Eye Center remains committed to the same principles that have guided it from the start: integrity, compassion, and a patient-centered approach to excellence. With a dedicated team and a multigenerational family legacy, the practice continues to set the standard for exceptional ophthalmic care.
