You might think you only need to make an appointment to visit us at Aker Kasten Eye Center when it seems like you need a stronger prescription for your glasses, but there’s a lot more to eye health than, well, meets the eye.
You may not realize it, but regular eye exams are an important part of taking good care of yourself, no matter your age or health. And here’s why:
- During a comprehensive eye exam, your eye doctor is doing much more than testing your vision and prescribing eyeglasses and contacts.
- We check your eyes for any signs or disease and other problems that could lead to vision loss.
- Your eyes can be an indicator of your overall health.
- A professional eye exam can detect chronic diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes.
- Adults should have their eyes tested to check for vision changes and to check for early signs of eye disease.
- Children should have their eyes tested to make sure their vision is developing properly as vision is key to doing well in school. In addition, children don’t always have the ability to tell us that their eyes aren’t functioning properly – blurry vision may seem “normal” to a child.
Another important fact: Vision “screenings,” often performed by pediatricians or other health care providers, do not take the place of a professional “eye exam.” Screenings only test your eyes as a limited method of identifying vision problems and may include tests for muscle coordination or common eye diseases.
Our doctors perform comprehensive eye examinations that include thorough testing of all aspects of your vision and eye health. Then depending on your individual results, we will recommend your treatment plan, which may include anything from glasses and contacts to vision therapy, treatment for problems such as dry eyes, or even surgery if indicated.
