Cataracts are a condition that can impact the eye—and a patient’s vision. The clouding and fogging of eyesight is a typical sign that cataracts exist. The condition cannot be cured, but with the use of surgery, can be addressed and eliminated. Cataracts will worsen over time, and the only treatment is surgical removal.
Do I need laser cataract surgery?
Severe cataracts that impact a patient’s vision and keeps them from being able to drive or participate in daily work or tasks may be addressed with cataract surgery. During an initial evaluation with the team at Aker Kasten Eye Center, patients with cataracts can determine if they are ready for surgery. Cataracts can take years to form, and it may take some time for them to actually be serious enough to treat. Patients who are paying for their laser cataract surgery on their own can have the procedure performed at any time. However, patients who have certain vision insurance plans may need to experience a certain level of vision impact before they can have the procedure covered with benefits. We encourage patients who are visiting our practice and considering treatments to bring their vision insurance information with them to their first appointment.
What happens during laser cataract surgery?
Cataract surgery is performed to remove the natural lenses that are impacted by cataracts. In the same surgery, the doctor will place an artificial lens, called an IOL (intraocular lens). There are many types of IOLs that can be selected based on one’s eye health and any conditions that impact their eyes, such as astigmatism. Patients will need to schedule time from work, school, and other activities to ensure proper healing and reduce the risk of infection after their procedure.
