At Aker Kasten Eye Center, we pride ourselves in offering exceptional service and quality care. Your eye health is as important to us as it is to you. With that in mind, here are commonly asked questions about vision and vision care to help you understand your eye health more completely.
- Why does my eye twitch? These annoying but harmless muscle spasms are temporary. This phenomenon is rather common and often a result of fatigue. When your eye twitches, it feel like your eyelid is moving, but in fact nobody can see it twitch. These annoying twitching sensations will often quit after you catch up on some much needed rest.
- When should my child get an eye exam? The first vision screening for a child typically takes place within a few days of their birth in the hospital. Their vision is also routinely assessed and wellness checkups at two, four, and six months old. At three years of age, alignment and amblyopia screenings are needed. After that, vision exams are typically every school year.
- How often should I have an eye exam? If you are between the ages of 20-39, your eyes need to be examined every 3-5 years. If you are 40-64, an exam should take place every two-four years. For those over 65 years of age, an exam is needed every one-two years. You are at high risk for eye problems if you have AIDS/HIV, diabetes, or a family history of glaucoma.
- Can wearing contact lenses stop nearsightedness from getting worse? No. Studies do not show a relationship between improved vision and wearing contacts.
- Can I use the same prescription as my eyeglasses to get over the counter contacts? No. Your eyeglass prescriptions does not have the detailed specifications for base curve, thickness, or lens diameter. Your prescription for eye glasses should be determined by a trained eye care specialist.
